One-on-One With Masson Liang

Once in a while, as an album makes its way through our workshop, it catches our attention. We stop and carefully go through each page. We might even grab a friend or send a slack to the whole team. Whenever it’s a Masson Liang album, we always take a moment to appreciate it.

Masson is undeniably a talented artist and an exceptional album designer. Not to mention, one of the nicest people in the RedTree Albums inbox! We were curious to learn more about this individual who seems to have mastered the art of wedding photography and the business of album sales. As many photographers are transitioning from the busy shooting season to the album sales season, we’re excited to share his insights.

Why do we need albums? I always tell my couples that the album is the “finale” and the wedding journey doesn’t feel complete without it. Their memories deserve to be preserved and should live outside of social media. Lastly, it’s a timeless piece for generations to enjoy and a time machine back to their special weekend at any time.

What motivates you to print? Outside of being a constant and beautiful reminder wherever it’s displayed, adding the tactile element to a photo really brings it to life. Prints and frames for me especially are an instant and nostalgic reminder of my own childhood and how memories in my mind have been preserved.

What inspires you when designing an album? Lately, I’ve really enjoyed browsing through different coffee table photo books, both wedding and non-wedding related. I draw design inspiration from these photo books and various magazines as well. When it comes to the design from the angle of my couple’s, I like to begin with key moments that really stood out to me from the weekend as anchor points. Once the key moments are established, I begin curating photos that build, tell the story and capture the feelings of the weekend.

Design your dream RedTree album…what would it be? I am seeing more and more of my couples wanting multi-event/day coverage leading up to their wedding weekend. I’ve had a few couples that have had me capture their engagement party, engagement session, bridal shower, welcome party, wedding day, and post wedding brunch/celebrations. I’ve always thought about wanting to put together a series (i.e. trilogy, pentalogy) of books as a beautiful set with each dedicated to an event/part of the wedding journey as a whole.
